Knight in Wonderland 이상한 나라의 택배기사 Knight in Wonderland 이상한 나라의 택배기사 택배 상자들이 하나 둘 쌓여간다. 그들은 서로 다른 모습으로 서로 다른 물건들을 그 안에 담아 서로 다른 장소로 배달되고 상품배송이라는 소기의 목적이 달성되면 폐기처분 혹은 재활용된다. 이것이 현실에서의 택배 상자의 운명이다. 그런데 이상한 택배기사가 있다. 그의 작업실에는 이미 사용되고 버려진 택배상자들이 가득히 쌓여 있고, 그 옆에는 오래된 잡지책들과 여러 종류의 책들, 사진들, 광고물들이 잔뜩 쌓여 있다. 작업대 위에는 공업용 글루건과 글루스틱들이 가지런히 놓여 있다. 그의 임무는 빈 상자들을 다시 밀봉하고 상자 표면에 이미지들을 부착하고 글루로 뒤덮어 단단하게 만드는 일이다. 그가 왜 어떻게 이러한 임무를 맡게 되었는지는 알려져 있지 않다. 심지어 그 자신도 알지 못한다. 그는 매일 출근하여 이 일을 반복한다. 상자들은 나날이 쌓여 간다. 카프카의 어느 단편소설에 나오는, 내용을 알지 못하는 메시지를 끊임없이 전달하는 메신저처럼. 그는 무엇을 어디로 어떻게 배달하기에 택배기사인 것일까? 상자는 무언가를 넣어 이동하는 수단에서 그 자체가 목적인 존재로 바뀌어간다. 상자의 표면은 배송정보가 아니라 온갖 이미지들로 채워지고, 다소 연약한 종이 재질은 그 위에 덮여진 글루가 건조되면서 단단해진다. 충격에 강해지고 심지어 방수도 된다. 상자의 내부는 비어있기 때문에 그것의 의미를 묻는 것은 무의미할 수도 있겠다. 그 빈 공간 안에 무엇이 있는지 혹은 무엇이 없는지는 알 수 없는 일이다. 그것은 영원한 비밀로 남겨질 것이다. 그렇다면 상자의 외부는? 여전히 알 수 없는 이미지들과 상자들의 관계로 인해 난항을 겪을 수밖에 없다. 서로 연관성이 없어 보이는 파편적인 이미지들의 임의적인 부착은 당황스러울 수 있다. 혹시 그것들 사이의 은밀한 상관관계가 형성되고 있는 것인가? 그들 나름대로 그들만의 세계를 구축해나가고 있는 것인가? 그들만의 언어로 그들만의 이야기를 만들어내고 그들 안에서 대화하는 그런 공간? 현란한 환영과 같은 이미지들의 시끄러운 대화에 관심 없다면, 질료와 부피를 가지고 실재하는 상자가 가지는 존재의 무게감에 관심을 가져보는 것은 어떨까? 글루로 뒤덮인 상자의 표면에서 일어나는 성질의 변화는 상자 자체에 어떤 영향을 끼치는 것일까? 단지 조금 단단해지고 반짝이는 외형을 갖게 되는 것뿐일까? 이제 그 상자들은 미술관에 전시된다. 미술관 전시의 특성상 일종의 무대장치와 극적 효과를 위해 다른 소품들과 영상들이 첨가된다. 알 수 없는 택배기사의 임무와 그 결과로 파생된 결과물인 택배상자들이 낯선 공간에서 관람객들을 마주한다. 관람객들도 그들 나름대로의 이야기를 발견하기를 바라면서 키에르케고르 인용문으로 이 글을 마무리하고자 한다. “반복은 부조리의 힘에 의한 운동이다.” 작가 노트 2024 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/575a4ed88a65e2b827e30743/1711551051677-PJ38980B031THKH5GDVZ/03.jpg Knight in Wonderland 이상한 나라의 택배기사 at Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art -
